Dynamic Todd Sutherland to Lead James River’s E&S Segment as President from May 2025

James River Group Holdings, the Bermudian holding insurance company, has announced succession in the Excess and Surplus Lines (E&S) business. Todd Sutherland, Management Liability Senior Vice President, will succeed as president of the E&S business effective May 5, 2025.

The change follows the newly announced retirement of Richard Schmitzer, president and CEO of the segment since 2010. Schmitzer is retiring on July 31, 2025, after over 45 years in the insurance industry. In consideration of succession planning, the company will no longer employ the CEO title for the E&S segment and consolidate leadership under the president banner.

Sutherland comes with over 30 years of industry experience and joined James River in 2023 to help grow its management liability business. Sutherland had senior executive positions at AXA XL and Allied World Assurance Company, where he managed large commercial lines and played a part in developing strategic regional operations.

James River CEO Frank D’Orazio stated that he was sure about the transition, also commenting, “Todd has demonstrated outstanding leadership and a history of building successful businesses. His appointment brings stability and accelerates our long-term strategic initiatives.”

Sutherland also commented, “It’s an honor to succeed Richard, who has played a pivotal role in building our E&S business. I am excited to build on this platform and continue to drive success.”
